NMB COUNCIL BRIBERY SCANDAL
| The Democratic Alliance (DA) Eastern Cape announced steps against individuals who allegedly tried to bribe DA councilors in the run-up to the Nelson Mandela Bay council meeting last week on Thursday, 28 January 2021. These attempts to influence DA councilors were done in desperation to keep council from re-electing Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, DA Cllr Nqaba Bhanga. This NMB bribery scandal follows against the backdrop of revelations at the Zondo Commission regarding State Security Agency (SSA) funds that were used to influence judges and politicians. DA Eastern Cape Provincial Chairperson, Andrew Whitfield, MP, and DA Eastern Cape Provincial Spokesperson, Mlindi Nhanha, MP, addressed the media in this regard today. Sufficient evidence is now available for the DA to proceed with laying a charge this morning at Walmer SAPS against Neville Higgins of the Patriotic Alliance for so called offering bribes to DA members in the NMB Council in order to influence the re-election of the Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor. Higgins was removed from the DA in 2019 with Trevor Louw after they turned against the party and sided with the new coalition government. Andrew Whitfield confirmed the DA’s position on the importance of protecting the democratic processes and institutions. “The Coalition of Good Governance will not deterred from its mission to take Nelson Mandela Bay forward again!” he stated. |
