ACTION ON JBAY-ASTON BAY ROAD

The Kouga Municipality engaged with local communities of Pellsrus, Tokyo Sexwale & Ocean View about safety aspects on the access road between Aston and JBay.

The Municipal Manager convened a further meeting with other role players, that included several councilors and municipal officials, Aston Bay and Paradise Beach Community Forums, KBF and other interest groups.

Kouga Municipality is committed to having the new road operational by June 2020 latest. It could be much sooner depending on how long it takes for the requisite EIA (necessary due to a small bridge required over an existing water course).

The road runs from opposite Gate 2 to join up with Duine Road that takes traffic through to the Billabong area.
It is planned to fence the main road past the township on both sides within the next month or so (with thanks to a sponsorship by Humansdorp Ko-op and with the full co-operation of the township community). Appropriate openings in the fence will direct pedestrian traffic to recognized crossing points.

KM will install additional lighting along the main road.
A traffic circle at the Kings College junction is under discussion, as are other traffic calming options to make that junction safer.
There are several other initiatives under discussion to make the access roads safer (including getting closer to and supporting our less fortunate neighboring communities).

Follow up meetings with all the stakeholders are planned to monitor progress and to ensure implementation.
A big cheer to Kouga Municipality for proving their commitment to safer access roads in a very practical and positive way.
A document with fuller feedback will be posted on the KM website in the next day or so.
