How South Africans access the Internet – ADSL vs Mobile

The latest Effective Measure report shows how South Africans access the Internet and which devices they use most.

Effective Measure’s September 2016 demographics report reveals that ADSL remains the main method for South Africans to access to the Internet on desktops.

Effective Measure is the official traffic measurement partner of the IAB South Africa and provides accurate traffic and demographics statistics for SA’s top websites.

The report, based on an online survey completed by 315,781 South African Internet users, shows that 43% of desktop users access the Internet via ADSL.

This figure may be higher, as 18% of users said they do not know which connection they use.

Fibre is currently used by 8% of South African desktop users, and this figure is set to grow rapidly as the technology becomes available across the country.

The survey further showed that the majority of South Africans access the Internet through their mobile phone, using mobile data.

The tables below provide an overview of how South Africans access the Internet.
